Een fysieke plek wordt soms een mentale plek, zoals in Hortus conclusus, de besloten tuin van de geest. Text and narrative play a crucial role in the visual work of Anna van Suchtelen, which includes installations, audio works and film, graphic prints and publications. Her projects, often context-specific and interactive, explore the senses, memory and time. The common thread that connects her works is the place. In Genius Loci and The Thin Stiff Tissue she explores the concepts genius loci and sense of place: she researches the vanished place, and through a language game with the word PLEK (place) she starts a journey to meaningful locations. She drills a time tunnel through layers of soil in Cocoon, or gets her biofuel from the pond in 52º05’23.6”N 5º07’48.6”E. A physical location becomes a mental one, as in Hortus conclusus, the enclosed garden of the mind. A point in time can be the start of an investigation into arrivals on new ground, in January 1, 1939, 4 p.m. The place can take all forms and formats: in the audio work Mrs. Mackay it can get as big as the space in which aliens to whom we send messages are located, in Soft Voices as small as the cochlea in our inner ear, the place that is responsible for sound transmission to the brain: for the translation from sound to listening.
